Repair and Care in a Fractured World: Utilizing Psychological Understanding for the Climate Crisis and Beyond

In this 2-part workshop, Dr. Wendy Greenspun outlines a psychological understanding of the various fractures and ruptures that are both embedded in and contributing to the unfolding climate crisis and it’s multiple layers of embedded harm and injustice. These ruptures include the internal defense mechanisms that can split off necessary awareness of climate disruption, the fractures between groups of people including various forms of polarization, marginalization and othering, and the white Eurocentric paradigm that separates humans from the more-than-human world. Movements toward repair of these various ruptures can create stronger ‘containers’ for the pain of individuals and communities and strengthen our capacities for transformation and action. Forms of care and repair will be elucidated through experiential breakout rooms and engaged discussion.

Who is this for?

Changemakers of all kinds, including climate and social justice activists, environmental practitioners, educators, clergy, journalists, climate scientists, social scientists, and students.

What to expect

We will utilize a psychological lens to understand the multiple kinds of fractures and ruptures that are contributing to the polycrisis at the individual/internal level, the sociocultural level and the ecosystemic level. A psychological perspective on these ruptures will be presented, as well as ways to move toward healing these fragmented states. Collective discussions and breakout rooms will help participants further build transformative practices, mirroring the essential nature of interconnection.

Learning outcomes

  1. Learn to identify various psychological ruptures related to the climate crisis and embedded harms that we see occurring at the individual, social/cultural, and ecosystemic levels, including how they contribute to our ongoing struggle to make needed transformations in the polycrisis.

  2. Ideas and approaches to repair these ruptures at all levels, utilizing psychological understanding and various wisdom practices.

  3. Foster connections with other participants as an experiential way to move out of isolation and fragmentation.
